Blood in the Inkwell

Travis Cooper

With 'Of The Dust', I wanted to show the influence of albums like Chris Whitley's Dirt Floor, Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska, records by Doc Watson, Norman Blake and the Tone Poems album by Tony Rice and David Grisman, and the impact they had on me my whole life. And of course, countless old blues records were done this way. Totally stripped down to an acoustic guitar and the song. No frills. Nothing to hide behind. Sometimes I just don't need any more music than just that. We were going for that intimacy, trying to make the listener feel they are right in the room with us as we were recording it. We recorded it very simply in Dan Anderson's studio back in Wisconsin. Our friends at Miktek in Nashville were kind enough to let us to borrow some high end studio gear for the project, and we were up and running. In trying to capture a very live and natural feel, I recorded my guitar and vocal together. And Anderson played the melodic mandolin parts throughout as well. While some people may need more instrumentation for their listening pleasure, I see 'Of The Dust' as another chapter in the storyline of my albums. It was a bit risky and it took chances. But it's honest.

Drifters & Dreamers

Only after I recorded this and upon a few listens,it became apparent that this record has a real 'struggle within' that seems to begin with the first song 'What Ya Doin' In Here Boy?' Yet it offers a light at the end of the tunnel with 'Jesus,Walk With Me', all the while admitting in the song that "I'm a stumbler through this old world." The inner struggles even show up in the more charcater study songs like 'Ballad Of Robert Burns' and 'Fiddler Jones'. I designed this record to pick up where 'portage' off. However, by the 3rd song the instrumentation starts to be stripped down considerably. Most of my live shows were becoming solo acoustic shows, so I thought this record needed to get more to the heart of that. So as a result, Drifters and Dreamers has a more organic, slightly more raw feel. So I humbly present to you....Drifters and Dreamers. Hope you enjoy it.

I can't help but think of this record as kind of my own 'Guitar Town' record, with all due respect to Steve Earle and that great, classic work, for various reasons. It was me coming to Nashville with songs I really believed in. Being hungry to make my own musical footprint. Making my own stand against the radio fluff. And getting the chance to record with, and hearing how top notch musicians would approach my songs. Being open enough to the freedom for them to do so. It was an exciting and challenging time. Albums like the aforementioned Guitar Town, Lyle Lovett's My Baby Don't Tolerate and Marty Stuart's work served as big influences on the final production here.I still really enjoy performing all these songs live,as they usually done in acoustic, stripped down form. And I enjoy hearing the record, the songs with a 'fuller' band instrumentation. Its always been fun for me to see where a song can be taken, without ever losing sight of the intent of the song itself.
